"NOT ALL WHO WANDER ARE LOST"

Wandering Angels Animal Sanctuary believes in our motto that ‘not all who wander are lost’. It embodies the hope and excitement of providing a second chance at a better life for neglected and abandoned and orphaned animals. And with the help of passionate animal lovers and advocates, we believe together we can educate others and make a meaningful contribution to reducing the amount of animal abandonment and neglect statistics in New Zealand.

‘Through education, there’s power.
Then with power in numbers, we promote positive change.
With positive change, the animals' voices become heard.’

Wandering Angels Animal Sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes animals. And sometimes, to save them more stress and heartache, we just let them retire on our little slice of paradise up in the hills. We provide a safe place for all animals that come into our care.

Tucked away on 4 acres with some views of the ocean and surrounded by valleys and beautiful bush. John and Michele have rescued and re-homed a variety of animals. And for many, they have provided a forever home at the sanctuary where they can be safe and happy living out their days.

Wandering Angels Animal Sanctuary is a no-kill animal rescue charity. Our commitment and focus is on ensuring any and every animal - no matter their age, breed, disposition or health - are given the opportunity of living a life with the five freedoms of Animal Welfare;

1. Freedom from hunger and thirst;

2. Freedom from discomfort;

3. Freedom from pain, injury, and disease;

4. Freedom to behave naturally;

5. Freedom from fear and distress.

'Not all who wander are lost', is the foundation of our values and mission and is actually inspired by a short poem by J. R. R. Tolkien:

“All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken, a light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken, the crownless again shall be king.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien

It is an inspiring poem which conveys how people who lose their way can still bounce back in life. And we strongly believe this applies to animals too. However, animals need our help to find their way again. When they have been let down by one human, our mission is to ensure that they are never let down again and are assisted on their way to their own happily ever after.
